The Gainesville Art in Public Places Trust met on May 6, 2026, to discuss the Thelma Boltin Site Trailhead & Sweetwater Loop Trail Alignment Development project. The project involves the conceptual design for a trailhead/park at the former Thelma A. Boltin Center site and the trail alignment for the northern loop of the Sweetwater Greenway Trail. The project scope for the Thelma Boltin Site/Trailhead includes approximately 2.2 acres, two parcels bisected by NE 2nd Ave, with options to incorporate NE 2nd Ave, Sweetwater Branch Creek ecological considerations, and maintaining community gardens. Approximately $2M is budgeted for the project site. The scope for the Sweetwater Greenway Trail includes incorporating a multi-use trail following NE Boulevard from University Ave to 6th Street Rail Trail, studying potential trail corridors, and considering creek, stormwater, parking, and accessibility. Trail construction is not currently funded. The project is in the Initial Discovery Phase, with a Spring/Summer 2026 timeline for site survey, ecological site review, and initial stormwater review. Public engagement opportunities include focus groups, city boards and committees, neighborhood groups, and a first public workshop. The meeting also approved the agenda and minutes from the April 1, 2026 meeting. A previous discussion on March 4, 2026, involved an update regarding the Gainesville Police Department Evidence Facility Public Art Projection, where the Trust agreed to proceed with the Public Art Fencing project.
