The Gainesville Cultural Affairs Board is considering updates related to the Thelma Boltin Site Trailhead & Sweetwater Loop Trail Alignment Development. The project involves conceptual design for the Thelma Boltin Site and the Sweetwater Greenway Trail Alignment. The project scope for the Thelma Boltin Site/Trailhead includes approximately 2.2 acres, bisected by NE 2nd Ave, with considerations for Sweetwater Branch Creek, ecological factors, and maintaining community gardens. The approximate budget for this project site is $2M. The scope for the Sweetwater Greenway Trail involves incorporating a multi-use trail along NE Boulevard from University Ave to 6th Street Rail Trail, studying potential corridors, and considering creek, stormwater, parking, and accessibility. Trail construction is currently unfunded but the project will help establish a construction budget. The project aims to connect with local artists, cultural organizations, neighborhood groups, and City Boards/Committees through a community engagement process. The project is currently in the 'Initial Discovery Phase' (Spring/Summer 2026), which includes site survey, ecological site review, and initial stormwater review. Public engagement opportunities include focus groups, City Boards + Committees, neighborhood groups, and a first public workshop. Future phases include 'Initial Plans + Trail Alignment Phase' and 'Refined Plans + Trail Alignment Phase'. The next meeting date is August 26, 2026. The previous meeting on April 22, 2026, approved the agenda and minutes from March 25, 2026. Business discussion items included updates on cultural activities for April and May, results of the Arts Award, and a reminder of the Outside Agency Grant meeting on May 17th. Chair Ruiz updated the board on quarterly meetings with PRCA Director Roxanna Gonzalez to receive feedback on board needs and concerns. The recommendation for the May 27, 2026 meeting is for the Gainesville Cultural Advisory Board to hear a presentation from Rachel Mandell, Interim Director of Wild Spaces and Public Places on the Thelma Boltin Site Trailhead and review the Outside Agency Grant Scores for recommendation of grant awards. The fiscal note for this item is $56,979.00.
