Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners adopted a resolution ratifying a contract with Hitachi Rail STS USA, Inc. for the purchase and overhaul of 10 rail vehicle trucks. The contract amount is $6,729,260.00. The parts are needed to replace components damaged in accidents and derailments and to complete six-year overhauls for the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW). Commissioner Bermudez expressed concern about the significant delay in presenting the contract for ratification, noting it was awarded in December 2023 but brought before the board two and a half years later. DTPW cited a management transition in the Goods and Services Division as the reason for the delay and stated steps are being taken to prevent future delays. The procurement was conducted under a prequalification pool for rail parts and services, and only one bid was received due to OEM requirements and system compatibility constraints. Hitachi Rail STS USA, Inc. is the OEM for the rail vehicles.
