CREATE ADVISORY BOARD TO COUNTY COMMISSION ON SOLID WASTE
Board of County Commissioners · 2026-06-02 · ordinance
Miami-Dade County has established a Solid Waste Advisory Board through Ordinance 260132. This board will advise the Board of County Commissioners on developing and implementing long-term, financially and environmentally sustainable solid waste management strategies. The board will consist of 15 voting members with diverse experience in finance, solid waste management, environmental compliance, and related fields. Members cannot be employees of vendors, suppliers, contractors, or service providers to the county. The board is intended to help address challenges such as landfill capacity issues following a fire at the Resources Recovery Facility (RRF) and to ensure compliance with concurrency requirements for development permits. The ordinance was introduced on January 23, 2026, adopted on first reading on February 18, 2026, deferred on April 15, 2026, forwarded with a favorable recommendation on May 13, 2026, and amended on June 2, 2026. The board will sunset five years after its establishment unless extended. The RRF, originally on a 100-acre site in Doral, has been inoperable since a fire on February 12, 2023. North and South Dade Landfills are projected to reach capacity in 2026 and 2030, respectively.
