Miami-Dade County has established a Solid Waste Advisory Board through Ordinance 260132. The board will consist of 15 voting members with expertise in finance, solid waste management, environmental compliance, and related fields. Its purpose is to advise the Board of County Commissioners on developing long-term, sustainable solid waste management strategies, including new technologies, cost management, and compliance with the Comprehensive Development Master Plan. The board will sunset five years after its establishment unless extended. The ordinance was introduced on January 23, 2026, and adopted on first reading by the Board of County Commissioners on February 18, 2026. It was forwarded to the BCC with a favorable recommendation by the Infrastructure, Innovation & Technology Committee on May 13, 2026, and amended on June 2, 2026. During the Infrastructure, Innovation & Technology Committee meeting on May 13, 2026, the Chairwoman opened the public hearing, and seeing no one come forward, closed it. Commissioner Cohen Higgins questioned the objective and timeframe of the task force, and Senator Garcia clarified its advisory role and that it would not address incinerator matters.
