RESOLUTION CALLING A COUNTYWIDE SPECIAL ELECTION

Policy Council · 2026-07-13 · resolution

Miami-Dade County is calling a countywide special election on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, to be held in conjunction with the General Election. The purpose is to allow voters to decide on amending the Home Rule Charter. The proposed amendments aim to revise the process for calling elections to fill commission vacancies and to establish minimum standards for municipal qualifying dates. The Charter Review Task Force recommended these changes, with a vote of seven in favor and one against. The resolution was introduced on 6/26/2026 and is currently in committee, with an agenda date of 9/1/2026. A scrivener's error correction was made on 7/9/2026. The question on the ballot will be: "Shall the Charter be amended to allow the Board to align the timing of special elections to fill vacancies in the offices of Mayor or County Commissioner with other scheduled elections when such vacancies are caused by resignations to run for other offices, and to establish minimum standards for municipal candidate qualifying periods?"
