BBEETF DISBURSEMENT OF $650K FOR MOORING BUOY PROGRAM
Recreation, Tourism, and Resiliency Committee · 2026-06-09 · resolution
Miami-Dade County is seeking authorization to disburse up to $650,000.00 from the Biscayne Bay Environmental Enhancement Trust Fund for the installation, maintenance, and management of mooring buoys within the Miami-Dade County Mooring Buoy Program. This program, established in 2009 and expanded in 2023, aims to protect natural and artificial reefs by providing designated mooring locations, thereby reducing anchor damage. The work will be conducted and overseen by the Restoration and Enhancement Section of the Department of Environmental Resources Management. The program currently has 54 mooring buoys at 14 sites from Golden Beach to the northern border of Biscayne National Park, located offshore of Commission Districts 4, 5, and 7. Quarterly maintenance by a contractor is required, along with interim inspections by DERM staff. Education and outreach are also part of the program. A previous disbursement of $350,000.00 in 2018 has been fully utilized. The Recreation, Tourism, and Resiliency Committee forwarded this item to the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) with a favorable recommendation.
