Miami-Dade County is seeking a modification to Field Permit No. 8042676-DA, which currently allows mechanical beach cleaning at specific sargassum hot spots. The goal is to gain discretion to include additional sargassum hot spots as needed without requiring further Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) approvals. This aims to improve the efficiency of sargassum removal, which is impacting tourism and resident quality of life. The Recreation, Tourism, and Resiliency Committee forwarded this to the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) with a favorable recommendation. The BCC is expected to consider this on 9/1/2026.
