The City of DeLand Historic Preservation Board is reviewing architectural design guidelines for new construction and additions. These guidelines require new buildings to reflect or enhance the city's existing historic architectural character. Designs must be consistent throughout a building and its accessory structures. While variety is encouraged, monotonous repetition of design elements is not allowed. Contemporary design elements are permitted if they maintain a link to historic character. The guidelines also specify styles that are not appropriate, such as those that are too unique or contrasting with the city's prevailing design character, or those that resemble non-building items. This review stage means that architectural and engineering firms, as well as contractors and suppliers involved in building design and construction, have an early opportunity to understand and influence future projects by engaging with the city's planning process.
