Miami-Dade County is implementing a policy change allowing active-duty military experience to substitute for traditional college degree requirements in 485 identified job classifications within the classified service. An additional 683 classified service job classifications do not require a college degree. This initiative aims to attract and retain a skilled workforce by valuing practical experience. The People and Internal Operations Department (PIOD) conducted reviews in 2022 and July 2023, leading to updates in over 100 entry and mid-level professional classifications and identifying an additional 97 professional, managerial, and executive classifications. Approximately 200 more classifications have since been approved for work experience substitution. The total number of job classifications in the county is 2,403, with 1,443 (60%) allowing work experience substitution or not requiring a degree. Of these, 1,168 are in the classified service. The report excludes department directors, physicians, exempt roles, elected officials, board/commission members, temporary employees, and positions inconsistent with law. Veterans must demonstrate that their military experience meets or exceeds the competencies of a traditional four-year degree for the 485 eligible classifications.
