The Village of Islamorada is planning a critical infrastructure upgrade to replace an aging, bridge-mounted potable water transmission main at Channel #2, located between Mile Marker 72.9 and 72.5. The existing 44-year-old, 30-inch steel pipe is vulnerable to marine conditions and has experienced recent breaks, causing water service disruptions. The proposed project involves installing approximately 3,300 linear feet of 42-inch high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe using horizontal directional drilling, placed 25 to 30 feet below the seabed. This project is currently under review and seeking $3 million in CDBG funding, with Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority (FKAA) providing a $1.8 million match. The project scope includes design, permitting, and construction, with construction anticipated to begin 12-15 months after grant award and last about six months. This upgrade will involve site preparation, subaqueous utility installation, and potentially road or bridge work related to access and permitting. Local contractors, suppliers, and service providers are encouraged to engage early, as design and bid documents are expected by December 2026, to understand the project's needs and potential opportunities before final plans are settled.
