New business formation across North Central Florida eased to 300 new companies for the week of June 27 to July 3, 2026, the fourth week in a row of slowing, yet almost exactly even with the same week a year ago.

Even as the overall count slipped, the makeup of the week pointed up. Real estate and rental companies climbed to 28 new businesses from 21, retail rose to 23 from 19, and farming and natural-resource businesses jumped to 17 from 10. Property holding and asset protection companies stayed the single largest group at 40. These are the parts of the local economy where owners kept opening up.

The map shifted too. Ocala and Gainesville are still the busiest places, with Marion County at 139 new businesses and Alachua County at 83, though both cooled from the week before. The growth this week came from the smaller rural counties. Suwannee tripled to 15 and Bradford tripled to 12, and towns like Live Oak, Williston, and Branford all gained. New activity is spreading out from the two big hubs into the countryside.

A few larger categories pulled the total down. New professional and technical firms fell to 37 from 51, construction to 20 from 30, and trucking and transportation to 11 from 23, both running well under their usual pace. In a region this size, one quiet week moves the totals a lot, so this reads as a normal summer lull, and the count is almost exactly where it stood a year ago.

Most of what opened were small LLCs, 229 of the 300 new businesses, spread across many industries rather than tied to one boom. Real estate even showed up in the names owners picked this week.

Datos llamativos

Lo que sobresale esta semana

Construction and trucking opened below their usual pace

New construction businesses came in at 20 this week, down from 30 the week before and well under the region's normal pace of about 38 a week. Trucking and transportation was also light at 11, down from 23. Both are worth watching, though a single slow week in a small region can swing these figures.

Growth spread into the rural counties

While Ocala and Gainesville cooled, Suwannee County tripled to 15 new businesses and Bradford tripled to 12. Smaller towns including Live Oak, Williston, and Branford all gained, a sign the region's activity is widening beyond its two main hubs.

Por la región

Contexto local

  • Crews broke ground on a new regional wastewater treatment plant in Newberry, paid for with more than $74 million in state funds, which brings a big construction and utility job to western Alachua County. A treatment plant this size means steady work for site and utility contractors, concrete and pipe crews, heavy-equipment operators, and the engineering, testing, and maintenance firms a plant needs to build and run. It also lets new homes and shops connect to service, which feeds real estate and retail demand nearby. Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 2026-06-26
  • BJ's Wholesale Club named Ocala as the site of one of its new Florida warehouse clubs, part of a 2026 expansion that will bring its Florida total to as many as 46 clubs. A new warehouse club brings construction work first, for site and paving crews, concrete, steel, roofing, and the electrical and plumbing trades, then steady retail jobs once it opens. A store this large also buys from local suppliers and hires out cleaning, security, landscaping, and freight and delivery work. BJ's Wholesale Club, 2026-05-22
  • The Ocala City Council rezoned about 2 acres at 619 SE 17th Street from office use to limited business commercial use on July 7, 2026, clearing the way for a new store, restaurant, or other business on the site. Changing a site to commercial use is the first step toward a new business opening there. It points to future work for commercial builders and site and finish trades, sign makers, and the retail, food, or service business that fills the space, along with the real estate, design, and permitting help a commercial project needs. Ocala City Council, 2026-07-07
  • The Ocala City Council approved a 251 acre mixed-use project on SW 43rd Court that allows up to about 1,809 homes plus nearly 595,683 square feet of retail, office, and recreation space in southwest Ocala. A project of up to about 1,809 homes and nearly 596,000 square feet of stores and offices is a long runway for homebuilders, road and site crews, and the trades who follow. Electricians, plumbers, and landscapers come next, along with the retailers, property managers, cleaners, and title and insurance firms who serve new rooftops. This lines up with the region's real estate and rental filings, which rose to 28 this week. Ocala City Council, 2026-05-05
  • The Newberry City Commission adopted a land-use change on about 160 acres at 25409 SW 30th Avenue, shifting it from farmland to low-density housing for a new residential development. Shifting about 160 acres of farmland toward housing opens future work for surveyors, land-clearing and grading crews, and homebuilders, along with the real estate, mortgage, and insurance services that come with new subdivisions. It fits the week's jump in real estate and rental companies and the growth spreading out from Gainesville. Newberry City Commission, 2026-05-26
  • Lake City's planning board reviewed a land-use change to allow higher-density housing on a property in the city, a step toward new multi-family homes in Columbia County. A rezoning for higher-density housing points to apartment or townhome work ahead: multifamily builders and trades, and later the property managers, leasing agents, cleaners, and landscapers who run rental communities. It matches the region's real estate and rental uptick and the activity in Columbia County. Lake City Planning and Zoning Board, 2026-06-09

Y entonces

Qué significa

The week's total eased, but the mix points somewhere useful. Real estate, rental, and retail are the sectors still forming companies. The biggest projects in the pipeline all feed those same trades and services: new homes and commercial space approved in Ocala, housing rezonings in Newberry and Lake City, a new warehouse club coming to Ocala, and more Ocala land cleared for stores and offices. For anyone selling to new businesses here, the best-placed prospects this period are homebuilders and the trades around them, real estate and property services, and the suppliers, cleaners, logistics, and professional services that new housing, retail, and industrial projects pull in. The growth is also reaching smaller counties like Suwannee and Bradford, so the map of new customers is wider than just Ocala and Gainesville.

These counts come from official Florida business-registration records for the 13 counties of North Central Florida, covering new companies recorded for the week of June 27 to July 3, 2026. We wait about two weeks after a week ends for the state to finish recording all filings, so these counts are complete and accurate. Industry groups use a plain-language mapping of standard business categories, and each share shown is that group's portion of the week's total.

Preguntas frecuentes

Does a slower week mean the local economy is shrinking?
Not on its own. This was the fourth slower week in a row and the lightest in about three months, but the count is almost exactly where it was a year ago, and several sectors, including real estate, retail, and farming, grew. In a smaller region, one quiet summer week can move the totals a lot.
Where should I focus if I sell to new businesses right now?
Real estate, rental, and retail are the sectors still opening in volume, and the largest approved projects point to homebuilding, trades, and the property, supply, and professional services around them. Activity is also spreading into rural counties like Suwannee and Bradford, so it is worth looking beyond Ocala and Gainesville.
