Northwest Florida recorded 456 new business filings the week of June 28 to July 4, 2026, the slowest week in about three months as the July 4 holiday shortened the work week.

Construction and the trades led again. Builders and trade firms formed 57 new businesses, just ahead of professional services at 56. Even in a slow week, that keeps a steady stream of new contractors that suppliers, subcontractors, and equipment rental firms can reach.

The coast held up better than the inland cities. Vacation and short term rental holding companies formed 21 new businesses, double the 10 from the week before. Panama City Beach added new businesses and Destin grew, while the larger inland cities pulled back. New rental owners need cleaning and turnover crews, property managers, repair and maintenance help, and landlord insurance.

Bay County, on the coast, formed the most new businesses of any county at 97. The bigger drops came from the metro and inland cores. Tallahassee, Pensacola, and Panama City all slowed, so most of this week's decline came from those cities.

Nearly every kind of business eased this week, which is what a short holiday week tends to do. No single sector fell apart, and none stood out as unusually strong. This was a quiet week across the board, not a change in direction.

• Williams International is building the first phase of a 1,000,000 square foot gas turbine engine plant at the Shoal River Industrial Park near Crestview, a capital investment of about $1.04 billion with 336 jobs committed at an average wage near $69,000. A plant this large is a long run of work for construction, concrete, steel, and electrical crews, then ongoing freight and logistics, industrial cleaning, security, and landscaping once it opens. • West Fraser is investing $70.25 million to expand its sawmill in McDavid, in Escambia County, a project set to add 30 jobs. A sawmill expansion this size needs construction and site work now, and industrial maintenance, freight and trucking, and safety and uniform services once it runs. • Jackson County commissioners took up several economic development and infrastructure items on July 14, 2026, including an economic development incentive agreement, an EDA grant amendment, and road resurfacing work funded by state grants, including about $3.47 million to resurface CR 167. County incentive deals and road resurfacing mean near term work for site and paving contractors, engineering and surveying firms, and the trades, plus the accounting, legal, and grant management help these public projects and incentivized employers rely on.
