Northwest Florida recorded 563 new business filings the week of July 5 to 11, a rebound from the holiday week before that still sits below both last year and the region's recent pace.

Professional Services led the mix with 72 new businesses, and Property Holding and Asset Protection followed close behind at 71. Administrative and Support Services added 55, Construction and Trades 54, and Personal and Other Services 53. Those five groups are just over half of everything filed in the region.

Construction and Trades was the one large group that slipped, down 3 from the week before while the groups around it rose. One week is a small sample, so this reads as something for suppliers and trade services to watch rather than react to. Healthcare went the other way, rising to 28 from 16, though the counts there are small enough that a handful of filings moves the number a long way.

Leon County led with 111 filings and Escambia followed with 105, but Escambia grew faster, adding 27 against Leon's 21. The same pattern shows up at the city level, where Pensacola rose 36.8% and Tallahassee 23.3%. Bay County was the only large county to lose ground, down 8 to 91, with Panama City Beach falling to 27 from 38.

Santa Rosa County rose 45.7% to 51, and Milton alone went to 28 from 17. Jackson County went from 7 filings to 22 and Holmes from 3 to 8. Those inland counties work from small bases, so the plain reading is that activity picked up there, not that they have become major markets.

• Federal transportation and aviation money totalling $8 million is going to the North Terminal Expansion Program at Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport. The finished terminal gains three gates and four extra carousels at baggage claim, six offices for airline baggage staff, more seating, new places to eat and shop, and restrooms that are easier to get around. A terminal build of this size means work for general contractors, concrete and steel crews, electrical and mechanical trades, baggage system installers and airport signage firms. Once the gates open, ground handling, commercial cleaning, security staffing and food service operators all have more space to serve, and each new concession tenant needs an accountant, an insurance agent and a point of sale installer. • The city says $6 million in federal airport infrastructure money is coming to Pensacola International Airport. It pays for widening the apron, and that work opens the first construction phase of the airport's terminal expansion and modernization program. • After the governor signed a $117.6 billion state budget on June 29, 2026, Okaloosa County confirmed $4,325,000 of it is coming to the county. The money splits four ways: $1.5 million for Millside Road improvements, $1 million for the West 98 Collector Road, $1.5 million for the Shalimar Bridge Park project, and $325,000 for an Okaloosa and Walton mental health and substance abuse pre-trial diversion program. Millside Road at $1.5 million and the West 98 Collector Road at $1 million mean site work, paving, signage and traffic control contractors, plus the engineering and surveying firms that design them. • Santa Rosa County told residents that House Bill 803 took effect July 1, 2026 and lifts the building permit requirement for some work on a single-family home valued under $7,500. The county also requires a written exemption request with supporting documents, bars splitting a job into phases to stay under the threshold, and allows no exemption at all for work in a Special Flood Hazard Area. • The City of Destin's local planning agency took up an ordinance to involuntarily annex about 2,076 acres east and south of Choctawhatchee Bay under Section 171.0413 of the Florida Statutes. Annexing 2,076 acres moves that land under city permitting, utilities and code, which is the kind of change that precedes development applications. • The City of Tallahassee said signal work starts July 20 where Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard meets West Tharpe Street and Northwood Boulevard. Crews will swap the strain pole signals for mast arms, move the traffic cabinets, upgrade the pedestrian signals and rebuild the sidewalks and crosswalks. Tharpe gets rotating single lane closures from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Northwood shuts completely during those hours.
