The Highlands County Planning & Zoning Commission/Local Planning Agency met on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The commission unanimously approved minutes from the previous meeting. In new business, they considered P&Z 2191, proposed amendments to the Land Development Regulations pertaining to certified recovery residences. The amendments aim to include definitions for 'recovery residence' and 'certified recovery residence,' list 'certified recovery residence' as a permitted use in R-3 and R-3 NC zoning districts, and create a new section for reasonable accommodation requests for individuals with disabilities, as required by Section 397.487 F.S. and the Federal Fair Housing Act. The commission recommended to the Board of County Commissioners to approve and adopt by Ordinance the proposed text amendments. Mrs. Kramer demonstrated the new eTRAKiT permitting and project software. The meeting was adjourned at 4:19 pm.
