FIRST QUARTERLY REPORT ON DIRECT AIR SERVICE

Aviation and Seaport Committee · 2026-04-13 · report

This report details the first quarterly update on efforts to establish direct air service between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Singapore, Tokyo, Riyadh, and Asuncion. The primary barrier identified is long-haul aircraft shortages, with meaningful fleet relief expected in two to three years. Singapore is not currently viable for nonstop passenger service. Tokyo presents a strong near-term opportunity with Japan Airlines (JAL), with potential for cargo service with Nippon Cargo Airlines in the long term. Riyadh is unlikely due to fleet limitations at Riyadh Air, but Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is a more realistic alternative via Saudia Airlines, with service expected in 2-3 years. Asuncion, Paraguay, shows potential for passenger service, with GOL Airlines re-evaluating the route, possibly announcing service in February 2026, and a target for MIA-Asuncion route in 2027. Cargo service to Asuncion is already provided by Avianca Cargo and LATAM Cargo. The report was accepted by the Board of County Commissioners.
