Around the region

Local context

  • Turner Construction was chosen on May 5 as the general contractor for Westcourt Orlando. That is a $500 million mixed-use project covering about 900,000 square feet on an 8.5 acre site next to the Kia Center downtown. Site work has begun. Groundbreaking is aimed for the second quarter of 2026. An opening is expected in late 2028. A project this size pulls in contractors, suppliers, and service firms. That can keep construction and professional service filings strong in and around downtown Orlando. Engineering News-Record, 2026-05-06
  • The Orlando Economic Partnership released its 2026 Global Orlando Report on May 22, describing the region as a growing, internationally connected economy and covering talent, trade, and investment. Continued outside interest in the Orlando economy supports a steady pipeline of new businesses for local vendors to sell to. Orlando Economic Partnership, 2026-05-22
  • Florida passed SB 122. It ends county authority to charge local business taxes. It also shuts down the statewide local business tax receipt system, effective July 1, 2026. Starting in July, new owners across the region's counties will have one less local tax and one less form to deal with when they set up shop. Florida Association of Counties 2026 Sine Die Report, 2026-06-01
  • Florida's 2026 session created a state framework for large developments. Developments of 15,000 or more acres can proceed under a Blue Ribbon Plan that can override local zoning and comprehensive plans. At least 60% of the land must be set aside for conservation or similar uses. It takes effect July 1, 2026. Large land projects in Osceola and Orange counties could move faster under the new rules. Over time that may feed more construction and real estate formation. Florida Association of Counties 2026 Sine Die Report, 2026-06-01
  • EverHome Living entered the permitting phase for a 94 townhome community on the Space Coast. Each unit is designed to include a roof terrace for watching rocket launches. New housing tied to the aerospace boom brings demand for trades, suppliers, and local services around Brevard County. GrowthSpotter, 2026-05-12
  • Italian space company Argotec opened its first U.S. satellite production facility in Melbourne on April 2. It has a planned $25 million investment and plans to triple its local workforce within two years. More aerospace hiring in Melbourne tends to spin off suppliers, contractors, and support businesses across Brevard County. Economic Development Commission of Florida's Space Coast, 2026-04-02
  • The Florida Small Business Development Center at UCF opened a new service center in Palm Bay, expanding free consulting and small business help to the Space Coast's second-largest city. Free local guidance can help new owners in Brevard County get started and stay open, which supports future filing activity. Florida SBDC at UCF, 2026-05-12

So what

What it means

If you sell to new businesses here, the week was smaller than the one before. Every county filed fewer than the prior week. It is a slower week, but the customer pool is still sizable. Most of these new firms are LLCs. The biggest single group is property holding and asset protection companies. Professional and administrative services come next. Orange County and Orlando still have the most volume, so that is where the most prospects sit. Keep an eye on the July 1 change that ends local business taxes. It lowers a startup cost across every county in the region.

Methodology

How we counted

Why we report a few weeks later

Florida's official business records are often still being updated for up to two weeks after a business first registers.

To give those records time to fully settle, we report on a week of filings about three weeks after it happens. Reporting a little later lets us show complete, accurate numbers instead of a partial early count.

These counts come from new business filings recorded with the state for the eight counties in Central Florida: Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole, Sumter, and Volusia. We wait about two weeks after a week ends for the state to finish recording all of its filings, so the counts here are complete and accurate. Industry groups use a friendly version of the standard government business categories. Shares are each group's portion of the week's total filings.
