Standouts this week
Okeechobee far above its usual pace
Okeechobee had 26 new filings, up from 16 the prior week. Its normal pace over the last 13 weeks is closer to 15 a week, so this was well above what it usually sees. It was the only county in the region running this far ahead of normal.
Around the region
Local context
- A West Palm Beach waterfront condo project called Shorecrest, with 98 units, secured $157 million in construction financing from GoldenTree Asset Management. Big residential projects like this feed work to local contractors, suppliers, and the kind of real estate and holding companies that filed in numbers this week. Florida Trend, Around the State: Southeast Florida, 2026-05-18
- Pre-sales began for 83 condos at the Ritz Carlton Residences on Bayshore Drive in Fort Lauderdale, a two-tower, 13 story project with units starting at $2.5 million and a 2026 groundbreaking. High end building in Broward keeps demand steady for construction trades and the service firms that support new luxury housing. Florida Trend, Around the State: Southeast Florida, 2026-05-18
- Developers broke ground on the Ritz-Carlton Residences in West Palm Beach, a 138 condo, 27 story tower set to finish in 2028. A multi-year build in Palm Beach gives local construction and supply firms a long runway of work, even in a week the county's filings slipped. Florida Trend, Around the State: Southeast Florida, 2026-05-18
- Crown Linen opened a 50,000 square foot commercial laundry with 150 employees in Pompano Beach to serve hotels in Broward and Palm Beach counties, adding to a Florida network that already includes a Miami site. New hotel support jobs in Broward point to steady tourism demand, which helps explain this week's gain in hospitality filings. Florida Trend, Around the State: Southeast Florida, 2026-05-18
- Florida's Infill Redevelopment Act (SB 1434), signed May 21, 2026, requires local governments in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach to allow housing on environmentally impacted parcels of at least 5 acres next to residential land through an administrative approval, removing local zoning hurdles and public hearings for qualifying sites. An easier path to build housing in the three biggest counties could pull in more real estate and construction startups in the months ahead. Day Pitney LLP, Florida's Infill Redevelopment Act Signed into Law, 2026-05-21
- Construction began January 7, 2026 on a new cruise terminal (Terminal G) at PortMiami, a $345 million investment designed to handle about 7,000 passengers per ship call and the largest cruise ships, with completion set for late 2027. A bigger cruise terminal in Miami-Dade supports tourism and the food, transport, and service businesses that depend on visitor traffic. CruiseMapper, Miami (Florida) Cruise Port Schedule, 2026-01-07
So what
What it means
If you sell to new businesses here, the work is still mostly in Miami-Dade and Broward, which together drove this week's gain. Real estate, hospitality, and company management formations are picking up, while finance, healthcare, and property holding entities pulled back. The total is roughly steady week to week but clearly higher than a year ago, so the pool of new buyers keeps growing. Watch the smaller counties too, since every one of them added filings this week.
Methodology
How we counted
Why we report a few weeks later
Florida's official business records are often still being updated for up to two weeks after a business first registers.
To give those records time to fully settle, we report on a week of filings about three weeks after it happens. Reporting a little later lets us show complete, accurate numbers instead of a partial early count.
We count new business formations filed with the state across the eight counties in Southeast Florida (Gold Coast, Treasure Coast & Keys). Figures cover the week of May 11-17, 2026 and are compared with the prior week, the same week last year, and a 13 week average. We wait about two weeks after a week ends for the state to finish recording all filings, so these counts are complete and accurate. Industry groups use a friendly grouping of the standard business categories, and counts include businesses not yet sorted into a category.
