July 28, 2026 Parks and Recreation Meeting

The Parks & Recreation Committee met on May 26, 2026. Key discussions included the Independence Day Bike Parade on July 1, 2026, starting at Destin Elementary School at 4 pm, with the parade beginning at 6 pm. The committee also discussed the upcoming Parks and Recreation meeting schedule, with a possibility of no July meeting due to busy events and no November/December meetings due to holidays. A DEP representative may present plans for Joe's Bayou at the June meeting. Budget discussions focused on operating and capital budgets, with priorities on renovations at Morgans facilities, including playground lighting, fencing upgrades, sod replacement, dog park shade structures, safety netting, dugout renovations, and batting cage lighting. Restroom improvements at Buck Destin, a cemetery shed, and continued safety netting were also discussed. The committee proposed keeping traditional fireworks for the 250th anniversary on July 4th and adding a supplemental drone show from an alternate location, to be presented to City Council on June 1st. Pooch Palooza generated approximately $1041, with potential uses for dog park agility equipment. New benches have been ordered for the dog park, and recent reseeding and turf improvements were noted. The new pickleball courts are nearing completion, with sod, trees, and irrigation installed, but court surfacing and utility issues are pending. A fishing line disposal unit for Norriego Point Park is pending an update. Concerns were raised about construction materials and a dumpster at a waterway access site near 731 Bayou Drive, with a volunteer offering to assist with clearing. Buck Destin Park fencing improvements were noted as appreciated by residents.
