Miami-Dade County Commission is considering a resolution to authorize additional expenditure authority for the Bus Passenger Shelter Program. The program, managed by the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) and contracted to Outfront Media Group, LLC, aims to install 500 additional bus passenger shelters with illumination systems and trash receptacles in the Unincorporated Municipal Service Area (UMSA). This expansion will increase the total number of sheltered stops in UMSA to 2,057, representing approximately 89% of all UMSA bus stops. The project is funded through the People's Transportation Plan (PTP) Bond Program. The total modified amount for Contract No. RFP-01071 will be $54,944,885.00, an increase of $24,980,000.00. The contract was awarded on May 19, 2020, and has already installed 717 shelters. The vendor is responsible for installation and maintenance, while the County receives revenue from advertising on the shelters. Concerns were raised by Senator Garcia regarding the vendor's prior contract and the division of advertising revenue. Vice Chairwoman Regalado suggested revisiting advertising rules to potentially increase revenue. Commissioner Bermudez requested assurance that the vendor complies with political advertising ordinances. The timeline for installation is multi-year, with specific completion dates for districts to be provided.
