Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners ratified a competitive contract award to Hitachi Rail STS USA, Inc. for $6,729,260.00 for the purchase and overhaul of 10 rail vehicle trucks. These parts are critical for replacing components damaged in accidents and derailments, and for completing required six-year overhauls for the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) Metrorail fleet. The contract was awarded on December 21, 2023, but ratification was delayed due to DTPW's management transition. Commissioner Bermudez expressed concern about the significant delay in presenting the item for approval, noting it was well beyond the typical timeframe. Mayor Levine Cava acknowledged the delay and stated a new system is in place to prevent recurrence. Hitachi Rail STS USA, Inc. is the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for these specialized components, and only one bid was received due to OEM requirements and system compatibility constraints. The contract term is six months and funded by Mobility Impact Fees.
