CREATE ADVISORY BOARD TO COUNTY COMMISSION ON SOLID WASTE

Board of County Commissioners · 2026-06-02 · ordinance

Miami-Dade County is establishing a Solid Waste Advisory Board to develop long-term, financially and environmentally sustainable waste management strategies. The board will consist of 15 voting members with expertise in areas such as finance, solid waste management, landfill operations, recycling, and environmental compliance. Members cannot be vendors or contractors of Miami-Dade County. The board will advise the County Commission on new technologies, cost maintenance, compliance with development plans, innovative disposal solutions, and improving reuse and recycling. The board has a sunset provision of five years unless extended. The ordinance was adopted on first reading by the Board of County Commissioners on 2/18/2026, deferred by the Infrastructure, Innovation & Technology Committee on 4/15/2026, and forwarded with a favorable recommendation on 5/13/2026, before being amended and adopted by the Board of County Commissioners on 6/2/2026. The RRF facility, originally on 100 acres, has been inoperable since a fire on 2/12/2023, impacting landfill capacity and concurrency requirements for development permits.
