Miami-Dade County has established a Solid Waste Advisory Board through Ordinance 260132. This board will consist of 15 voting members with expertise in solid waste management, finance, and related fields. Its purpose is to advise the Board of County Commissioners on developing long-term, sustainable solid waste management strategies, including identifying new technologies, managing costs, and improving recycling and diversion. The board will sunset five years after its establishment unless extended. The ordinance was introduced on January 23, 2026, adopted on first reading on February 18, 2026, deferred on April 15, 2026, forwarded with a favorable recommendation on May 13, 2026, and amended on June 2, 2026. During the Infrastructure, Innovation & Technology Committee meeting on May 13, 2026, the Chairwoman opened the public hearing and noted no one came forward to speak. Commissioner Cohen Higgins questioned the objective and timeframe of the task force, and Senator Garcia clarified its advisory role and that it would not address incinerator matters. The ordinance is effective ten days after enactment.
