Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners approved an additional expenditure authority of $61,320,728.00, bringing the total modified contract amount to $121,320,728.00 for Contract No. D-10253, which covers Motorola Public Safety Radios and Capital Infrastructure for multiple county departments. This contract modification primarily supports upgrades for the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department (MDFR), Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department (MDCR), and the Communications, Information and Technology Department (CITD). The MDCR requires replacement of approximately 2,800 radios that are 17 years old and have exceeded their 7-year useful life. MDFR's allocation includes funding for the Integrated Command and Communications Center (IC3), system operations, maintenance, APX NEXT radios, Visilink, mobile radios for new vehicles, and WAVE subscription costs. CITD's funding supports portable radios, hardware refreshes, and redundancy enhancements for the Premier One Computer-Aided Dispatch system. The contract was amended and approved by the Board of County Commissioners on June 16, 2026. Public comment included concerns from Senator Garcia regarding the total new amount and the cost of radios, and questions about interoperability and vendor reliance. Dr. Edwards and Chief Jadallah provided clarifications on the system's operability, longevity, and the number of municipalities using Motorola radios. Commissioner Gonzalez raised questions about the age of equipment and connectivity, while Commissioner Cohen Higgins questioned the timeline for MDCR to receive new radios. Vice Chairwoman Milian Orbis sought clarification on pricing discrepancies and the necessity of standardization, requesting staff to determine if alternative radios could meet the needs of CITD and Corrections. The contract expires on August 3, 2027.
