SUBSTITUTE ACTIVE-DUTY MILITARY EXPERIENCE

Board of County Commissioners · 2026-07-21 · report

Miami-Dade County is implementing a policy allowing active-duty military experience to substitute for traditional college degree requirements in 485 job classifications. An additional 683 classifications do not require a college degree. This initiative aims to attract and retain a skilled workforce by valuing practical experience. The People and Internal Operations Department (PIOD) conducted reviews in 2022 and July 2023, leading to updates in over 100 entry/mid-level and an additional 97 professional, managerial, and executive job classifications. Approximately 200 more classifications have been approved for this substitution. Veterans must demonstrate that their military experience meets or exceeds the competencies typically associated with a four-year college degree for the 485 eligible classifications. The report details these findings and actions taken.
