Miami-Dade County has established a Solid Waste Advisory Board to guide the development and implementation of long-term solid waste management strategies. The board will consist of 15 voting members with expertise in finance, solid waste management, environmental compliance, and related fields. Members cannot be employees of County vendors, suppliers, or contractors. The board will advise the Board of County Commissioners on issues including new technologies, financial stability, cost maintenance, compliance with the Comprehensive Development Master Plan, innovative disposal solutions, and improving reuse, recycling, and recovery of materials. The board is established for five years unless extended or superseded. The ordinance was adopted on first reading on February 18, 2026, deferred on April 15, 2026, forwarded with a favorable recommendation on May 13, 2026, and amended on June 2, 2026. The RRF facility in Doral, originally on 100 acres, has been inoperable since a fire on February 12, 2023, impacting landfill capacity and concurrency requirements.
