North Central Florida's 13 counties recorded 394 new business filings the week of July 11 to 17, 2026.

Administrative and support services filed the most of any named group at 43, up 13 from 30 a week earlier. Retail came in close behind at 40, up 17 from 23. That retail move is a 73.9% jump in seven days. It also sits well above the pace retail normally runs in this region. Cleaning was the fastest rising word in the new business names this period, turning up 13 times.

Two counties hold most of the activity. Marion County filed 188 and Alachua County filed 111. Ocala by itself accounts for 162 of those filings and Gainesville for 90. The smaller counties moved too. Columbia County filed 25, up 8 from 17, with Lake City at 21. Bradford County filed 13, up 6 from 7, and Starke inside it filed 9.

Building and property work formed together. Construction and trades filed 34, up 10 from 24. Real estate filed 23, up 10 from 13. Transportation and logistics filed 25, up 8 from 17, and health care filed 25, up 6 from 19. Not every group grew. Personal and other services filed 24, down 17 from 41. Hospitality and tourism filed 27, down 4 from 31.

Most of what formed is small. 287 filings were Florida limited liability companies, or 72.8% of the week. Another 66 were fictitious name registrations, up 18 from 48. This was the second week in a row with an increase. The region still sits 5.5% below the same week last year, when 417 businesses filed, and the average week over the last 13 weeks is 397.2.

• Ocala's planning and zoning commission reviewed a request to rezone about 5.93 acres at 314 and 28 NW 14th Street and 1332 NW Magnolia Terrace to light industrial, case ZON25-0008. The same agenda carried case ZON26-0010, a request to move about 3.05 acres in the 1700 block of NE 18th Place from light industrial up to medium industrial. Close to 9 acres of Ocala land is being lined up for industrial use. That is site work, grading, concrete, framing, electrical, plumbing, and roofing before anything opens, then the roll off hauling and commercial cleaning the buildings need once tenants arrive. • Wood Resource Recovery of Marion County asked the county commission for a special use permit, case 260503SU, to add a food grade operation that strips packaging off food waste at the vegetative debris composting site it already runs. The tract covers 36.77 acres of heavy industrial land at 8510 and 8548 NW Gainesville Road in Ocala. A 36.77 acre waste site adding a new processing line needs equipment installers, electricians, concrete crews, and heavy haulers, then steady truck traffic to keep it fed. Administrative and support services, the group that covers waste handling, filed 43 businesses this week, the largest named group in the region. • A major site plan for the Sunstop #360 store on NE 35th Street in Ocala went before Marion County's development review committee. The applicant, Mastroserio Engineering, asked to pay a $13,824 fee in place of building sidewalks and to hold off on a right turn lane until the county widens NE 35th Street. A new store on a road the county plans to widen means paving, utility work, fuel system installation, signs, and refrigeration fitting, then cleaning and landscaping contracts once it opens. Retail filed 40 businesses this week, up 17 from the week before, so the demand for shopfitters and store suppliers in Marion County is showing up in both places at once. • Marion County commissioners took up case 260703SU on July 22, 2026, a special use permit for a Gerber Collision Center automobile paint and body shop on a 3.18 acre site zoned community business, parcel 47690-004-00. Building a body shop on 3.18 acres calls for site clearing, a slab, spray booth and compressor installation, electrical, and paved parking, plus landscaping at the end. Once it runs it buys parts delivery, uniform and rag service, waste paint disposal, and towing. Trades and auto service suppliers around Ocala have a named project to bid. • Alachua County commissioners held the adoption hearing on application Z26-000002. It covers about 580 acres on the east side of SW 122nd Street, also called Parker Road. The land moves from rural agriculture to a new UF Golf Institutional designation for the University of Florida Foundation. The policy permits a golf course, clubhouses, accessory retail, research and office space, maintenance buildings, and up to 30 units of cottage lodging. 580 acres cleared for course building, clubhouses, and up to 30 lodging units is years of earthmoving, irrigation, drainage, paving, and planting, then long running grounds care once it is open. Landscaping and irrigation firms, well drillers, fence and cart path crews, and the cleaning, linen, and food supply businesses a clubhouse buys from all sit in the path of this one. • Alachua County commissioners took up final plats for two residential developments, the sixth and last phase of the Oakmont Planned Development and Laureate Village Phase 2 Units 3 and 4. The county's development review committee reviewed both at its June 18, 2026 hearing and recommended approval. A final plat is the step right before lots can be sold and houses go up, so these two put roads, water lines, and homebuilding on the near calendar in west Alachua County. Framers, roofers, plumbers, electricians, and flooring crews get work, and title, survey, and insurance firms get closings. The week points at two buyers. The first is the storefront owner: retail filed 40, up 17 in a week, and the store work on the public record in Ocala says that demand is real, not a blip. The second is the crew that cleans, hauls, and maintains, with administrative and support services filing 43 and 13 new business names carrying the word cleaning. Marion and Alachua counties hold 299 of the region's 394 filings, so a seller who works Ocala and Gainesville reaches most of the new owners. Building trades should watch Alachua County closely: two subdivisions reached the final plat stage and 580 acres off Parker Road were rezoned for course and clubhouse work, and construction and trades filings rose to 34 alongside them. The region is still 5.5% under last year, so this is a steady market to work rather than a boom to chase.
