Northwest Florida added 693 new business filings the week of July 26 to August 1, up 12.3% from the week before and the first weekly gain after a stretch of declines.

Northwest Florida recorded 693 new business filings for the week of July 26 to August 1, up 76 from the prior week's 617. That 12.3% jump is the first weekly increase after a run of falling numbers, and it lifts the week just above the 13 week average of 640. Against the same week last year the region is little changed, up 6 filings or 0.9%, so this is a rebound inside the region's normal range rather than a breakout.

The gain was broad but uneven. Professional, scientific and technical services added 35 filings to reach 97, up 56.5%, the largest single move in the region. Construction rose 17 to 68, up 33.3%, and health care and social assistance climbed 13 to 37, up 54.2%. Knowledge work, building trades and care services all formed new businesses in volume this week.

The beach corridor led the geography. Walton County jumped 33 filings to 82, up 67.3%, and Santa Rosa Beach rose 25 to 51, up 96.2%. Fort Walton Beach added 14 to 41. Leon County stayed on top with 144 filings, up 26, and Okaloosa climbed to second with 118, up 16.

The 13 week total is still falling, down from 8,435 to 8,322, so the longer trend has not turned. But the week itself is a clear step up, and the sectors and places that moved point to where the new work is forming.
