Northwest Florida's 16 counties recorded 628 new business filings in the week of July 12 to 18, the second weekly rise in a row.

Leon County produced the biggest single gain in the region. It logged 138 filings, up 26 from the week before, and all of them sit in Tallahassee. Escambia County followed with 115, up 10, and Okaloosa added 13 to reach 99. Bay County was close to flat at 93, and Walton rose 11 to 63. Santa Rosa was the one large county to slip, down 4 to 48.

The sector that moved most was hospitality and tourism. It jumped to 55 filings from 38, a gain of 17 in one week, which fits the middle of the Gulf Coast summer. Property holding and asset protection stayed the largest single group at 86, up 14, and 14 of those are seasonal or vacation rental holdings. Real estate rose to 40 from 31. The beach towns show the same thing: Panama City Beach added 7 to reach 34 and Destin added 5 to reach 21.

Underneath that, the businesses that sell to other businesses held the top of the list. Professional services came in at 69 and administrative and support services at 60. Construction and trades held level at 54. Two smaller sectors ran well above their usual pace: education reached 17 against 4 the week before, and wholesale and distribution reached 10. Limited liability companies made up 454 of the week's filings, and trade name filings rose to 92 from 68, which points to small local ventures rather than large entities.

The longer view is flatter than the week alone suggests. This week sat under the 658.6 average of the past 13 weeks, and it came in 13 below the same week last year. The last 13 weeks add up to 8,562, a little under the 8,587 in the 13 weeks before that. Read the week as a summer recovery off a soft stretch, not a boom.

• The Escambia County Development Review Committee listed eight projects on its July 29, 2026 agenda. Two are warehouse yards, one on South Highway 97 for a truck drop and swap operation and one on South Highway 29. The list also carries an expansion of generator production on Scenic Highway, a multifamily project on North T Street, and phase two of Seminole Bend on Beulah Road with 45 lots. Eight live projects in one county on one day is a steady pipeline for site work and paving crews, concrete and framing subs, surveyors, and building trades. The 45 lot subdivision phase feeds homebuilders, roofers, plumbers and electricians, then real estate and title services. A generator plant expansion and two warehouse yards add work for industrial electricians, racking and dock installers, and the freight carriers that will serve them. • The Panama City Port Authority board's July 30, 2026 meeting agenda includes a second amendment to the Container Freight Station warehouse lease with Linea Peninsular, Inc. It right sizes the leased space to 50,000 square feet at $7.21 per square foot a year, about $30,041.67 a month, on a month to month basis that keeps the tenant's cargo moving through the port. A 50,000 square foot freight warehouse staying in use keeps steady work for truckers, freight brokers, forklift and pallet suppliers, warehouse labor, and customs and logistics paperwork services. • The Jackson County Board of County Commissioners' July 28, 2026 agenda includes setting a public hearing on a Spanish Trail Lumber site plan change at 6112 Old Spanish Trail in Marianna. The request seeks approval to add 38,768 square feet of building area and 48,787 square feet of asphalt, for 87,555 square feet of added hard surface. Adding 38,768 square feet of buildings and 48,787 square feet of paving is direct work for grading and paving contractors, steel building erectors, concrete crews and electricians in a rural county that does not see many jobs this size. A bigger lumber yard also means more inbound and outbound loads for local trucking, and more supply on hand for the builders working across Jackson County. • The Tallahassee-Leon County Office of Economic Vitality reported that the Intergovernmental Agency board approved a $375,000 funding request for a new pharmacy at Neighborhood Medical Center. The office states the project is projected to generate nearly $3.9 million in economic output, support 11 jobs, and create about $1.5 million in wages and income. Fitting out a pharmacy inside an existing clinic is work for build out contractors, refrigeration and shelving installers, security and IT vendors, and medical billing services. The 11 jobs it supports are the kind of hiring that brings in staffing firms, payroll and bookkeeping help, and the insurance and compliance services a health care employer needs. • The Santa Rosa County Commission's July 9, 2026 regular meeting agenda includes approval to submit Florida Commerce defense grant applications for 2026 to 2027. One is a Defense Reinvestment Grant of up to $250,000 with a required 30% local match of about $75,000, and the other is a Florida Defense Support Commission application of up to $500,000. The same agenda begins the process of creating an Agricultural Legacy zoning district at one home per 30 acres. Defense grant money in this county tends to flow to contractors who serve the military installations nearby, so engineering firms, security and fencing installers, road and utility crews, and the training and support vendors around Whiting Field are the ones positioned to bid. The proposed farmland zoning district goes the other way and would hold density down, which matters to any builder or land buyer weighing rural parcels here. • The Triumph Gulf Coast board agenda for its July 22, 2026 meeting lists a presentation on a pending proposal from the Gulf County Board of County Commissioners. The proposal is for a ship maintenance, repair and overhaul facility, for up to $23,500,000. No action was to be taken at that meeting. A ship repair yard at this scale would need marine welders, machinists, painters and coating crews, riggers, and parts and fuel suppliers. It would also need the safety and environmental compliance services a working yard has to carry. • The Escambia County Planning Board took up rezoning case Z-2026-12 on July 7, 2026. It covers about 160.07 acres at the 1700 block of Jacks Branch Road. The request moves the land from Agricultural, at one home per 20 acres, to Rural Residential, at one home per 4 acres. The board recommended approval. Going from one home per 20 acres to one per 4 acres on 160.07 acres raises what can be built there by a wide margin. That is future work for land clearing and septic and well contractors, road and driveway builders, and homebuilders working rural lots. Tallahassee alone accounts for 138 of the week's filings and Pensacola another 113, so anyone selling to brand new businesses has the deepest prospect pool in those two cities. Second, the mix leans toward property and hospitality, with 86 property holding entities, 55 hospitality and tourism filings, and 40 in real estate. That is a direct signal for title and closing services, insurance agents, property managers, cleaning and turnover crews, linen and food suppliers, and yard and pool maintenance. The cited projects say the demand behind those numbers is real. Eight live projects sat on one Escambia review list, a Marianna lumber yard is seeking 38,768 square feet of new buildings, and 160.07 acres near Jacks Branch Road is set to allow five times the homes. All of it needs the same trades that filed this week. Construction and trades held flat at 54 filings, so the contractors chasing that work are not yet crowded by new entrants.
