NewBiz Alert Florida industry report

August 7, 2026 Technology & IT new business activity in Florida

Published

By NewBiz Alert, from Florida Division of Corporations filings and public technology sector announcements. How we built this.

Florida registered 27,132 new technology and IT businesses over the last 365 days, and 1,713 of them filed in the last 30. The last 90 days account for 4,464. The biggest moves this month ran through Orlando, where a Norwegian defense supplier opened its first American office, and through three county governments writing rules for large data centers. Software, IT services, cybersecurity and data companies keep registering to serve the work, and new firms are forming in every region.

New technology and IT businesses are forming fastest in Southeast Florida. Every newly registered technology firm draws on a predictable set of local businesses. A new software, IT, or cybersecurity company needs business registration and legal help, accounting and payroll, cloud hosting and equipment, professional liability and cyber insurance, office or coworking space, marketing and web design, and recruiters to hire engineers. Every company expansion and county decision nearby is a source of both talent and clients. That is why new formations tend to cluster around the regions where the tech economy is already strongest.

The counts below show where new technology and IT businesses are registering, by region, over the last 30, 90 and 365 days. Under them is the recent news tech owners are watching, from an Orlando office opening to county data center rules, with the specific businesses each one creates work for. The statewide bodies and the local resources sit at the bottom, in Technology and IT Resources.

The news

Recent technology and IT news in Florida

New developments tech owners are watching right now, with the real date of each and the specific businesses it creates work for. This month's verified items sit in five regions, led by an Orlando office opening and three county governments acting on data center rules. Northeast Florida, Northwest Florida and North Central Florida had no new primary source development land inside the trailing window this month, so those regions are represented by their standing resources below rather than a news item.

Norway's Green Ammo opens its first United States office in Orlando

Green Ammo LLC, the U.S. subsidiary of Norway based Green Ammo AS, opened its first U.S. office at 4100 Silver Star Road in Orlando. The office serves as the company's U.S. operations hub for customer engagement, product demonstrations, engineering coordination, training, logistics and program execution for U.S. military and allied defense customers. The expansion creates 10 new high wage jobs with salaries averaging $100,000, which the Orlando Economic Partnership notes is 42% higher than the average annual pay of $70,562 in Orange County for 2025.

A defense training technology company standing up its first American office hires engineers and support staff, fits out the space and lines up local suppliers in its first months.

Brevard County moves to make data centers ineligible for a tax exemption

The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners listed as Public Hearing item H.2 at its August 4, 2026 meeting an ordinance amending Chapter 102, Article IV, Division 3 of the Brevard County Code to make data centers ineligible for economic development ad valorem tax exemptions.

A county deciding which facilities qualify for a tax exemption puts a premium on advisers who can read the new rule and on the engineers and contractors who build the facilities that still qualify.

    • land use attorneys
    • zoning consultants
    • civil engineers
    • electrical contractors
    • commercial real estate brokers

A written county rule on data center incentives gives the rest of Florida a tested starting point for deciding how these facilities are treated.

Miami-Dade awards a $12.5 million contract to extend service to its Green Tech Corridor

The Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution R-644-26 on July 21, 2026, awarding Contract No. S-16113 to All Construction & Plumbing, Inc. for $12,506,147.00 to extend wastewater and water service to commercial and industrial parcels in the Green Technology Corridor along N.W. 27 Avenue. The contract runs 627 calendar days and is paid in part from the Building Better Communities General Obligation Bond program.

A county extending water and sewer to a technology corridor opens the parcels to new commercial and industrial construction, which creates work for the crews that build and fit out those buildings.

DeSoto County adopts a data center moratorium

The DeSoto County Board of County Commissioners adopted agenda item 26-1906, an ordinance titled Data Center Moratorium, at its July 28, 2026 meeting with a Pass result.

A county pausing new data center applications pushes demand toward land that is already entitled and toward the advisers who can read the new rule before anyone files.

    • land use attorneys
    • zoning consultants
    • civil engineers
    • commercial real estate brokers

Venice weighs an IT server project against a move to the cloud

The City of Venice City Council included agenda item 26-0672, an IT Server Project vs. Cloud Cost/Benefit Analysis, at its July 8, 2026 meeting.

A city comparing on site servers against cloud services is a live signal of demand for the IT firms, cloud providers and managed service companies that bid on and run that work.

So what

What it means for you

New technology firms form fastest where the tech economy is already strongest, and this month's developments sit in those same places. A Norwegian defense supplier picking Orange County for its first American office is a signal of demand for engineers, software and services, and it buys hosting, insurance, accounting and office space locally, early.

Three county governments spent the last month deciding what to do about large data centers. Brevard County moved to make them ineligible for a tax exemption, DeSoto County adopted a moratorium, and Miami-Dade put public water and sewer into its Green Technology Corridor. For most technology owners this changes nothing, since software and IT firms are office based. For the land use advisers, engineers and electrical contractors who work on these projects, it moves the work toward the counties that have already made room for it.

Most technology and IT businesses do not need a state occupational license, so they can open quickly once they register with the state. That speed shows up in the formation counts. A new firm still lines up the same first purchases, from registration and accounting through to cyber insurance and recruiting, and demand for those services tends to appear right after a firm registers, in the same regions where the tech economy is heaviest.

Methodology

How we count

  • We count each business by the date it registered with the state, so this shows new business formation, not the current number of tech firms.
  • State records post about 2 weeks behind, so the last week or two will keep rising as more filings arrive.
  • Most technology and IT businesses register with the Florida Division of Corporations and do not need a separate state occupational license, so new firms are traceable soon after they form.
  • Counts cover active Florida businesses and update daily.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the most new technology and IT businesses forming in Florida?
This report ranks every Florida region by new technology and IT businesses and shows if activity is heating up or slowing down.
Do Florida tech and IT businesses need a license?
Most do not need a state occupational license. A new software, IT, or cybersecurity business registers with the Florida Division of Corporations and then typically lines up accounting, cyber insurance and hosting to open.
What kinds of businesses are in this report?
It covers software and SaaS, IT services and managed services, cybersecurity, web services, and search and social marketing firms.
Are large data centers part of this industry?
They are a related but separate story. A data center is a building project that goes through county zoning, while most of the businesses counted here are office based software and IT firms. Three Florida counties acted on data center rules this month, so the report covers both.
Where does this data come from?
The formation counts come from official Florida business registration records. We pull every new filing, sort it by industry and region, and update daily. We count a business by the date it registered with the state.
Can I see the actual businesses?
Yes. You get the real filings, with business names, addresses and officers, free for 7 days, with no credit card required. Start a free 7 day trial to see them.
